I bought one of these to mount my Garmin Nuvi 755T GPS. The item description and photograph for this item are not accurate. Firstly, the photo shows a ball-end mount where devices can be attached. The item came with a rectangular square plate and screws that you have to bolt onto the device being mounted. Secondly, the description states that it is “compatible with all Garmin(r) Nuvi(r)” devices. This is absolutely false. Maybe with the ball end as shown in the photo. Maybe. But definitely not with the screw-on mounting plate provided.

The idea of this mount is good, but the execution is poor.

I purchased this and thought it was great for the first few weeks I had it. Despite being extremely careful with it, the exposed wire shown in photos started separating at it’s insertion point and the device charging failed after only several weeks of use. This is just like cheap headphones that lose sound in one ear after a few weeks use because the thin audio cables start to break off of the ends at the ear buds.

The end that plugs into the car’s charging port also fell apart once while unplugging it, but I was able to reassemble it and use it again until that super-fragile electrical wire started to fail.

You can consider it a disposable device.

I won’t buy another like this. I wish they would make one of much more rugged quality even for several dollars more cost.

I have a Garmin nuvi 760, and this product works like a dream. The round ball socket fits perfectly with my nuvi 760 and the lighter socket power plug is placed in a perfect position for my GPS to be plugged in. The pedestal arm can be easily adjusted to the desired placement angle with no tools being required. The product is also extremely convenient to remove…you just unplug it from your car’s cigarette lighter socket. I’ve now purchased an additional product for my son’s GPS.

I bought this product one month ago. When I plugged it into my lighter socket and connected the dongle to the GPS, the fuse blew. I bought more fuses and they all blew very quickly. I was shipped a new one because they said this should not be happening but the new one did the same thing. I would not recommend this product. I recently purchased the vent mount. I hope it works better.

I’m not sure what product the guy who complains about it not working with Garmin GPS units got. This has the standard ball mount and works great with my Garmin Nuvi 855. It works fantastically actually. The only concern I have is the little wire they use for the socket. It’s slightly troubling after reading another review mentioning that as being a problem area and I think I’ll use a zip-tie to hold the socket against the arm. That should take any pressure off the wire and prolong it’s life. That said, it looks like with a little work the socket could be pretty easily replaced and you could solder a new one in. Now, I’d like to mention why this mount is superior to the USB version that is also available from Arkon…At least with the 855 and possibly with any of the newer Garmin GPS models.

I originally bought the Arkon GN097-USB thinking it would be nice to not have to use the cigarette socket power cable that came with my Nuvi. Eliminate clutter, simplify connection, etc. Well, it works, with one major caveat. When running on USB power alone, the Nuvi 855 backlight is DISABLED. This cannot be changed in software and after some research I discovered this is because of the higher power demands of the chipset used in the 855. In order to have enough power to function on USB, the backlight is disabled. This makes if VERY hard to see when driving.

So, to conclude I highly recommend this mount. It works well, is reasonably well constructed (my only concern being the thin wire used for the socket), and it’s really the only good option I’ve been able to find to mount the GPS in the cigarette lighter socket…So, if that sounds good to you, buy it. I’d highly recommend it.

Also of note, I gave it five stars to help offset the incorrect review written by Charles Hunt.
